During the 19th century and two decades of the 20th century there was a wide circulation of Giuseppe Garibaldi portraits. His image was used by painters and sculptors to go deeper into the realist style often using photos as model. Moreover, there was a wide circulation of allegorical and symbolic images that fixed Garibaldi’s portrait with peculiar stereotypes.

The exhibition called “I mille volti di Garibaldi” is a summary of Garibaldi’s ‘images’ through original printings taken from old British newspapers, lithographs taken from the Deputazione di Storia Patria per le Marche, private collections and Cultural Institutes which have kindly lent their material. The exhibition is enriched with Garibaldian weapons, books, medals and relics.
The event has got a cultural purpose rather than a nostalgic look, and it aims at spreading the knowledge of a characters who still represents the Italian historical identity, mostly among young generations. Garibaldi can be seen through his life thanks to the iconographical material collected, and widely used by Garibaldi himself, to widespread  his triumphs and his myth.

The exhibition is promoted by the Comitee of Pesaro and Urbino of the Istituto per la Storia del Risorgimento Italiano (Institute for Italian History and Renaissance) and organized by the Municipality of  Macerata Feltria. It is held to celebrate the bicentenari of Garibaldi’s birth (1807-2007). Jan Marten Ivo Klaver,  Stefano Orazi and  Gilberto Piccinini arranged the related catalogue.
